Capital New York: Labor Discusses Single Payer

By Dan Goldberg, Capital New York

UNITED – At a Labor Press event on Wednesday, representatives from several unions gathered to discuss the future of health care, and how the ACA impacts their members and future bargaining power. There was broad approval over the provisions of the ACA that eliminate lifetime caps and allow children to remain on their parents’ plans but frustration at the parts of the law that, they believe, will disincentivize the kind of multi-employer insurance plans unions cherish. Much of the discussion, however, focused on a single-payer bill proposed by Assembly Health Chair Dick Gottfried, which supporters acknowledge has little chance of becoming law in the near future. Nevertheless, passage in the Assembly, they hope, can reframe the discussion.
